The Unheard Musician

Documentary, Seattle, Washington

Fact:

“Research shows that making music can lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, reduce stress, and lessen anxiety and depression.” - Dr. Suzanne Hanser, Chair, Music Therapy Department, Berklee College of Music in Boston

Synopsis:

A 75-year-old classical pianist and his filmmaker granddaughter embark on a creative journey in search of healing after a series of family tragedies. Music has helped Dante Cabasco survive some of the toughest times of his life - the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II, death threats when he worked as a union leader, fleeing to the U.S., the death of his wife of 55 years, and the suicide of his grandson. Behind Dante’s smiles and quiet demeanor, you would never know that this man has endured so much pain. His music is the real storyteller.

Reflections:

We worked with a sound engineer and a music producer to record Dante as he played his original compositions. One of our favorite moments was watching the delight on Dante’s face when we played his music back for him. He was like a kid again.
